Keyless Smart Keys do not have a traditional key blade (although they will have an emergency/valet key hidden somewhere inside them). Smart Keys where developed by Mercedes Benz in the mid-nineties as fully electronic access and authorisation system for some of their vehicles.
Smart Keys are detected by the car using a series of antennas and the vehicle can be unlocked without you physically pressing a button. The car can then be started with a start button once the smart key is detected inside the vehicle.
These type of keys are very secure and normally use rolling codes, rather than a single code to access the vehicle. If a Smart Key stops working you should have an emergency key blade “hidden” within the Smart Key. Replacing a Smart Key is not an easy affair and often can only be replaced by the car manufacturer. Give us a call to see whether we can help with the replacement or repair of your Smart Key.
